Meet the FarmersApolinar (Poli) Yerena was born in Jalisco, Mexico, into a family of farmers.
He began farming as a strawberry picker in 1967, learning to farm on his own after his family acquired 2.5 acres of land for sharecropping in Watsonville. In 1982 he converted 5 trial acres to organic farming. He quickly learned the importance of organic produce and was happy to be met by a growing interest in organic produce in the Bay Area, shortly thereafter he transitioned the entire 22-acre farm in Watsonville, CA to all organic, as it is today. Today, Yerena Farms is operated with the help of Poli’s wife Silvia, his children, and a small team of full time employees. |
